Best of the Best Investing- what is it?

BoB investing is a method of individual stock investing so simple your neighbor Bob can do it. The method is this, buy equal amounts of 15 of the best performing stocks in the previous 52 weeks, hold them for a year, and then do it again. The market has decided for you that these are the best stocks. It's like creating your own mini index, except you create the rules and have more control. After you create and save your stock screen filter, you can create your portfolio in about 30 minutes. The labels on the left of the screen have some examples of how you can set up your stock screen and some live and historical portfolio data based on my filter. No banging your head trying to figure out the red and green arrows on the stock ticker all day long, just set it and revisit in a year. The cost of executing 30 trades annually at a discount broker will run anywhere from $0 to a little over $200. You won't see market commentary from me, just monthly reports and tracking of the closed portfolios vs the S & P 500.

BOB portfolio picking process example

I use Ameritrade stock screen to filter out the 15 best performing stocks over the past 52 weeks. My filter includes Nasdaq, 3.5 billion market cap, and performance greater than 10% over the last 52 weeks. I then have them listed in order by percentage gain. On 12-15-2017, this list included quite a few no revenue biotech stocks, which was easy to find out with a quick look on Yahoo Finance. In order to minimize the risk level and increase diversification, I crossed most of them off the list. You have lots of choices in the screen to filter out larger stocks or only see stocks with dividends or whatever type of stocks you like. The object is to diversify and let the stock performance help you choose your 15.

Capital gains- you are in control

So you waited one day longer than a year and its time for you to create your new BOB portfolio. In this example you had a $10000 increase in value. You can choose to keep $10000 worth of gains by selling all of the losers and enough of the winners to keep $10000 worth of stock, you just created a zero tax situation. You can now create your BOB 15 and keep several of your winners as well, its all up to you.
